EXECAL, Association - Expires 31.01.2020
On November 29th and 30th, the Neuchâtel International Fantastic Film Festival (NIFFF) and the Cineglobe Film Festival at CERN collaborated with the Pro Helvetia Swiss Arts Council on a unique workshop that aimed at strengthening the concepts and development phases of 9 immersive projects from Switzerland (video game, augmented/mixed/virtual reality) in terms of storytelling, technology and scientific accuracy. After two intense days of conferences and discussions between participants and experts, the project BAT VISION from Eliane Zihlmann & Raffaele Grosjean, industrial design students at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste (Toni Areal, Zürich) was granted a CHF 3,000 supporting prize.

Elliot Vaucher & Karian Før [ECAL graduate, Bachelor Media & Interaction Design, 2011] were also rewarded for their project UNMEM PLASMA by our partner STORYTEK (Estonian accelerator and pole for innovation). They will be able to benefit from proper mentoring in the year to come.

The projects were selected following a call for projects that had a set theme, namely the impact of science on the development of society.

This unique workshop was being held for its third year in a row in the legendary CERN, the European centre for particle physics. It delivered on its promises, with new discoveries, conceptual surprises and reflections on the origin of imagined worlds, immersive media and interactivity. The workshop’s organisers and partners want to offer a collaborative space for experimentation and reflection, while passing on actual knowledge on scientific progress and the mechanics of immersive writing.

Hiroyuki Morita (28), is a Japanese industrial designer, furniture designer and founder of a design studio who got nominated the second time for the Pure Talents Contest. Morita gained a Master degree at the ECAL in Switzerland. As a designer he aims to merge the future and the past harmonically. For this he is investigating the history of technological evolutions and traditional culture.

Powerless and quiet: the non-electric vacuum cleaner „OMIT“ designed by Hiroyuki is handy and does its job without the typical vacuum cleaner noise. Perfect for all who love to clean up at night, for parents with sleeping children, people with sound-sensitive flat mates… What else can you think of?

11.12.2019 - Mélanie courtinat: Pastor/Placzek questions the notion of surface through its interaction design work - It's nice that
MID
EXECAL, Association - Expires 29.02.2020
Interaction designer Mélanie Courtinat [ECAL graduate in Media & Interaction Design, 2017] and creative director Quentin Dubret immediately started working together after first meeting in late 2017, forming the Paris-based creative studio Pastor/Placzek. “We realised we shared the same views on the use of technology and interactions in digital arts,” the studio tells It’s Nice That. “Working with technology allows us to explore and experience an in-between state where the ‘realness’ is digitally altered,” the studio explains.

Having worked with brands like Dolce & Gabbana and on artistic projects with make-up artist Cupid’s Vault, the studio’s goal is to focus on what it calls “liquid interactivity” in their projects. The studio’s first interactive VR project, I Never Promised You a Garden, turned into a manifesto about interactivity. At its core, although interaction design has become more widely utilised in a range of creative and immersive projects, many of these forays into digital reality projects are still highly device-dependent.

02.12.2019 - Alex Tran : pneumoscope primé au concours 'Challenge Innovation by Design'
DI
EXECAL, Association - Expires 29.02.2020

EXECAL, Association - Expires 31.01.2020
REALNESS is a self-portrait project by Gaïa Lamarre shot at ECAL in 2019 [for her graduation in Bachelor Photography].

This fantasized metaphorical journey expresses my doubts and indecisions about increasingly conscious identity questions. Inspired by the spiritual, social and political place of gender non-conforming people throughout history and my own experience, trying to reconnect with my true self. I created this new world, a place where I don't need to identify myself. Where I'm not afraid of being judged, where I’m not afraid of others. Where I don't feel fear, far from this binary model. That world is safe. Built on the memories of those who, before me, also simply wanted to live their lives in an authentic way, without wondering if the next day would be their last.

EXECAL, Association - Expires 31.01.2020

---
Luisa Kahlfeldt presented her Master’s project [Product design 2019 at ECAL], the Sumo Diaper, on the stage of the 2019 Antenna conference during Dutch Design Week hosted by Design Indaba.

According to Kahlfeldt, as an industrial designer, she wanted to create a project that deals with the issues of sustainability but instead of just focusing on the way we consume or produce a product she wanted to go all the way to the source and create a sustainable material herself.

Her research led her to an interesting material called seacell fiber. Seacell is a cellulose fiber that is made from eucalyptus wood pulp and brown algae extracts. Using a closed loop production method, the material is eco-friendly, fully biodegradable and produces little to no waste.

The fabric created by local manufacturers, however, is a combination of other materials such as cotton. She thus set out to create 100% pure seacell fabric. After receiving a few kilograms of the material, she processed, cleaned and wove the fiber creating the first batch of 100% seacell fabric. The incredibly soft, durable and sturdy fabric opened up a dozen possible uses for the fabric.

But Kahlfeldt wanted to create something that served as more than just a decorative purpose. She thus decided that the best option would be to create a baby diaper. According to Kahlfeldt more than 80% of European parents make use of disposable baby diapers. These diapers are incredibly harmful to the environment and take up to 500 years to decompose.

“Not only are these diapers harmful to the environment but they are harmful to babies as well. There has been links to cancer-causing chemicals found in these diapers,” says Kahlfeldt.

Adding, “The project has a very special place in my heart because as an industrial designer you don’t often have the opportunity to design and invent the main ingredient of a project yourself."

ECAL graduate Tuo Lei [Master Product Design 2019] has created a fashion collection from abandoned festival tents, based on simplified patterns that can be replicated at home with just basic sewing skills and the accompanying instructions.

The P+365 project turns the tents collected from a given festival into a series of raincoats, caps, bags and bucket hats, with the aim of selling them at the same event the following year.

Alongside this, an illustrated, step-by-step manual complete with sewing patterns also allows people to take matters into their own hands.

Hi there!

I'm Elise, I design and make ceramics currently in East Sussex.

I enrolled on a ceramic course a couple of years ago and immediately realized it was my thing.
Working on the wheel is very meditative and what I enjoy the most is experimenting with various shapes and decoration techniques.

Every time pieces are coming out of the kiln it's a real thrill. Sometimes the result is very different from what I expected... but that's the magic of it.

My ceramics are ethically and sustainably produced in small batches in my little studio. I love the feel and uniqueness of handmade objects.

Novembre is an online and biannually printed magazine devoted to the vertiginous excitement of contemporary urban life.

Under the candid caption "Art practices, beauty & innovations", we explore the worlds of art and fashion to challenge cultural trends and produce innovative imagery.

While proposing intergenerational discussions that explore the power structures in which images and technology occupy decidedly ambiguous positions, we like to nurture the emerging, the outsiders, the arrivistes, the ugly, the dirty, the failed, the exaggerated and honestly wonder about the today’s definition of "bad taste".

Since 2010, Novembre has been an independently published media, fully and commissioned and directed by its creators, Florian Joye (Lausanne), Florence Tétier (Paris) and Jeanne-Salomé Rochat (Berlin), all trained at ECAL (Switzerland).

Genoma Grotesk is a variable screen font, which adjusts to its surroundings in real time. It was developed by Robin Eberwein as part of his Bachelor thesis at SUPSI in Canobbio, TI. The font is primarily designed for screen applications such as digital posters. Depending on the relevant light situation in the surroundings, its strength changes – from light-faced to bold or vice versa – in order to ensure there is always optimal legibility. The project underwent three work stages: First of all the font was digitalised so that 81 different weights could be worked out, which enable a smooth transition from light-faced to bold on the screen. The second step was to define and technically implement the interaction between the font strength and the surrounding brightness. Finally a video, an interactive website and various print products were created, which are for the presentation and documentation of the project. Additional applications for Genoma Grotesk are being considered in the field of entertainment and marketing.

Handsetter is a precision machine developed and manufactured in Switzerland, which is used in watch production. It places hour, minute and second hands as well as the hands of stop watches on the clock unit. A built-in camera enables the position and horizontal orientation of the individual hands to be checked to ensure correct assembly of the watch. The Handsetter is placed on the watchmaker’s table and is geared to the requirements of someone who works while sitting with regard to its ergonomic design. A carefully cut worktop made of solid beechwood gives a pleasant feel to the surface and offers the wrists a comfortable and secure place to rest. An asymmetrically arranged touch screen for the control functions makes it easier to read the information. Together with the rounded edges of the housing, it gives the machine both a characteristic and contemporary appearance at the same time.

DG
EXECAL, Association - Expires 31.01.2020

The second volume of the series “Visual Archives” is devoted to the unknown history of the pioneering society of the phototypesetting of Bobst Graphic.

At the beginning of the 1970s, the Bobst SA packaging company decided to diversify production, introducing electronics and IT to its operations. Within a short period of time, major resources were developed and a range of word processors and phototypesetting machines created with the help of a number of top-level scientists, including Jean-Daniel Nicoud, René Alphonse Higonnet and Louis Moyroud (the inventor of phototypesetting). Very soon after Bobst Graphic was set up, Bobst SA decided to participate in the development of new typefaces with renowned typographers such as Team’77–among other reasons, in order to create a symbiosis between the typographic form and the latest technologies.

Forty years later. This book uses archive documents and witness interviews to reveal the history of the Bobst Graphic division and the many fascinating results of their research.

Available for purchase in English and French separate versions at ECAL Shop (see link 2 below).

'A refreshing and yet simultaneously well-founded topic selection for a research project in the field of design. The author was able to involve competent partners to carry out the interdisciplinary project so that there are no doubts about the fact that the proposed alternative sausage recipes can be implemented. an impressive example of food design.’ – Comment of the nominators

ECAL graduate carolien niebling has teamed up with a molecular chef and a master butcher to design the future sausage, an alternative aimed as a solution to the protein-rich-food shortage we are currently facing. The project utilizes the production process of sausages and their wide variety of sizes and endless choice of possible fillings to emphasize the need for reducing our consumption of meat and highlight the greater diversity of other nutrients.
